There has been frequent failures of ...a) failures of transaction b) frequent time-outs and now finally a failure to register.

It is to note that irrespective of number of times uninstalled and reinstalled this failure is constant.

Then you go through the comments box. Most of the negative remarks are of recent origin.

When I tried to send a complaint I received an automated mail saying UPI has permanently closed the response to contact mail id.

What a pathetic situation!.

An app that worked very well for nearly two years suddenly failing means ...don't you feel something fishy.

Hope people like PAYTM and Goole Pay are not part of this foul game to cause disrepute to BHIM and influence consumers to their fold.

It is not believable that a country full of smart software professionals could not fix a small bug which is causing a loss of brand image

Can't they change the contact Mail ID in the App's update version?

It is shameful to watch the behaviour of elected members of Karnataka state assembly with the recent crisis blowing up. It is no surprise that the coalition government cannot last as it was formed by the parties rejected by people. I had outlined this as soon as the election results were out leading to hung assembly.
Look at today the tug of war going on !!

Now, after barely 14 months later, 14 members from the supporting party have resigned from the party due to dissatisfaction on account of "non performance".

Initially the CM tried to blame BJP of horse trading. They had strongly refuted the allegation and said it is internal squabble between JDS and Congress.

What could be the squabble about?

My guess is that the EMI ( hope you understand) has not been paid as per agreement and the MLAs getting a fear that they had been taken for granted. When demand is raised both party bigwigs look the other way. "A pig that has two masters is bound to die of starvation"

Naturally when the promises have not been kept it generates contempt and acrimony. These are all undercurrents and common man like us never come to know the size of the deal nor the true culprits.
If the media members get to know also they may not reveal either because of friendship with the political clout or of fear.

The Chief minister has ignored the governor's recommendation to face the 'floor test' to win the motion of confidence twice . Obviously he realizes that is not going to be possible.

The strategy of JDs & Congress today is to force the President to dismiss the government and cry victimisation by BJP ( I am writing this as the drama is still in progress & the out come is yet to unfold)

To what level the so called 'leaders' can stoop !!

We need to amend the constitution whereby numbers ( or majority) are not important. It must enable the largest political party to form the government whether it enjoys majority or not. They should be allowed to work for a period of minimum three years without fear of 'no confidence' in the assembly floor. For more details please see my earlier post on Election reforms.

A skeptic may say ' you get the government you deserve'. To a great extent it may be true. That cannot be the reason to remain as a passive witness to looting of tax payers money by a few politicians.

If the system need to be corrected it should be, especially when the required strength is there with the central government to make the corrective action.

Update as on 23/07/2019 on the political crisis in Karnataka

After prolonged sessions for two days with very boring rhetoric by the most of the treasury bench speakers finally the speaker of the assembly, Shri Ramesh Kumar, decided to conduct the voting on no-confidence motion. The result was well known even before voting started. The coalition government fell by receiving 99 to 105 votes against it.

It is to be seen that how many more comic situations may come up before next government is formed. Till then the media world will have plenty of news alias rumors and gossips in the name of discussions. Jai Kar-nataka, Jai Bharat !!!!

Come the month of April, our Mysore electricity supplier M/s Chamundeshwari
Electricity Supply Corporation promptly revises the tariff rates without fail.
I had seen, it is almost 30% increase in the last 3 or 4 years. It is more than
the annual inflation index.

One major reason is ever increasing the
administrative overheads. Despite
increase in solar power supply the CESC is unable to control the inflationary
trend in its operations.

Leave that alone. Whenever they have to hike the power
tariff at least it should encourage the Low Energy Consumers and discourage the
High Energy Consumers.

In reality the opposite is happening : I consider consumers using less than 100 units are as LECs and above 100 units as HECs.

I have a twitter account since 2009. Seldom I used it but for announcing my new blogs whenever I posted one. I did not take active interest as it looked a very murky world ( even now it is) and limited space to express anything useful.

We can interact with anyone and everyone, known or unknown, a celebrity or common man we may get instant response.Though I was aware of it, I could not pay attention as I had better things to do earlier.

But now that I have lesser things to do my attention turned to twitter and social media. I felt these were better than noisy meaningless TV debates fighting for TRP rating

My experience in the last four or five months did not alter my earlier views. It is still a murky place lot more than what I had imagined. If you try to follow the threads you get lost like in the bylanes of a metro city.

The amount of misinformation or rumour and the speed with which it can spread is much much faster than TV media or Print media. Many people retweet without thinking or verifying the facts. Then there is hashtag (#) to classify or categorize your message. There is lot more to know...

Meanwhile the Parliamentary Committee has called for a discussion with Twitter Official to control and prevent wrong usage of the twitter handle. This scheduled for Feb 11th 2019. I have sent my suggestions through a tweet.

In case WhatsApp the problem is different. There in the name of protecting privacy of individuals they claim everything is encrypted. They cannot dig information to report origin of the news or how the message got spread. In short there is no traceability. This will make the investigation process very difficult in case of any legal cases arise based on Whatsaap ( click on the figure to read the news item and the suggestion)

As these social media platforms are still evolving it should not be difficult to incorporate necessary change.

It is very important that false messages and provoking or instigating messages should be made punishable, both in Twitter and WhatAapp. The netizens must learn to use them as fire. Negligence or lack of vigil may create a law & order problem anywhere in the country any time

The latest news is that individuals can set up EV charging stations and no license is required. This is from the ET Energy News. Click the figure to see enlarged figure.

What is not clear is how one is going to figure out the business potential. Though it is not a matter of concern for the government it does not give any direction to the overall concept to move ahead. It needs volume of vehicles to seek the charging stations. Why anyone would come forward to put up a charging station where electric vehicles are not around ?

In essence it allows the grid power to be tapped for charging with a tariff cap of 15% over the average cost of supply. This opens up lot of questions. Assume average cost of power is Rs 7 per kwh. 15% is Rs 1.05 ie the charging station can charge the EV owner at the rate of Rs 8.05 /kwh if my understanding is right.
I expect the possibility of more electric scooters than electric cars in the near future which may stand to benefit from this scheme and hence restrict this discussion for two wheeler charging needs.

A two wheeler even after 6 to 8 hours of charging consumes only 1 to 1.2 kwh as battery size is between 21 Ah to 33 Ah with a charging current of 1.2 Amps.

In other words even after allowing for 6 hours a person earns only Rs 8 per terminal !! Is there any attraction in terms of revenue ?

A seeker of alm outside any big temple or Church would earn more than that in that period !! ( just in a lighter vein)

What is the cost of installing a charging station and the return on investment (ROI) apart from the investor's margin ? These questions certainly does not get any answer with this kind of press release or reporting.

Best way is to insist on solar based charging stations as a stand alone ( with a back up from power grid for nights) and use net metering for connecting to the grid.

Thus even when there are no vehicles to charge, the generated power gets exported to the grid and gets some income for investment for the entrepreneur. Here charging station with two or three terminal is just an add-on to the solar power generation unit from investment point of view. This will also help to identify the Charging stations dedicated for the specific purpose of EV charging.

The revenue model for such stations is already discussed in the embedded slide share in my previous post.
Today's news item confirms that some thinking is going on with the government machinery about installing charging stations for electric vehicles.

Almost two years back we had pointed out in our slide presentation that how the charging stations can be installed in all parking lots of colleges, rail and bus stations, malls etc.

It was also pointed out that with the smart apps and prepaid charging systems one can develop real time billing for the power consumed by the charging duration. Be it half an hour or three hours the appropriate amount is calculated and deducted from one's subscription.

Those who have not viewed the full presentation can view it here.
In this blog we keep reiterating unless the petrol based two wheelers are replaced ( in big cities) neither pollution will go down nor the burden on exchequer will reduce.

The petrol based two wheelers are causing more harm whichever way one looks at for country's economy and environment.

We have been listening to this for almost four years ever since this BJP came to power. Except opening some Charging Stations here and there or ordering 10000 Electric cars with Tatas and Mahindras nothing truly has happened to call a big policy break through

Is it lack of technology ? CERTAINLY NO .

Charging station infrastructure can be created in no time with solar grids. People will come forward to invest as the surplus power can be sold Power corporations whenever vehicles are not charging. Hence that cannot be an excuse.

Range anxiety of vehicles can be easily overcome if charging stations facility are made available at colleges, hospitals, Malls and all parking lots. Therefore that cannot be a reason.

The present Lead acid battery is good enough for 30 to 40 KM and 4 to 5 years of life for all two wheelers. Thus improvement in battery technology is not a constraint

What is lacking is the will to implement.

May be some powerful lobby of petrol vehicle manufacturers do not want EVs to increase in number as their business is at stake.

Some of the key positions of EV Association are held by big heads of petrol vehicle manufacturers. It is but natural they can create stumbling blocks for electric two wheelers as the main business would get affected.

If the government or Niti Ayog is serious about bringing out a useful policy they can do the following.

1) Bring " age restriction" to drive petrol two wheeler vehicles -particularly in all major towns and cities . That is, all those above 18 and below 25 should ride only electric vehicles. This, to a great extent reduce the present reckless driving by youngsters and anxiety of their parents at home.
Implementation of this will create a boom in the market though sales of petrol vehicles may get affected. Rather this will force the present manufacturers to seriously get in to EV business instead of giving lip service.

2) Electric vehicles with less than 25 Km speed capability need not require a driving licence to drive. This will encourage more persons to buy EVs. This speed is more than adequate for commuting in big cities.

3) Allow more entrepreneurs to manufacture electric scooters and cycles as most of the parts are available in open market (including the DC motor drive ) and it is only a question of assembling them. [ Delhi's electric rikshaws are good example]. Such assemblers should be certified by RTO or Automobile Association of India to maintain quality and road worthiness.

It is very important to note that what is costing exchequer 67 % of petrol payments is to meet the demand by two wheelers. See my slide show below.

Unless a firm policy to put a cap on petrol two wheelers popularisation of electric vehicles only be a distant dream.

Indian media are possessed with three things Cricket, Cinema and Corruption. Wherever money comes in to play corruption is bound to be there.

Corruption in systems can be addressed through legal course of action. But when the very basis of governance is entrenched with corruption, the remedy is difficult through legal course.

One way is to modify the system so that scope for corruption becomes less and and less.

Fathers of our Indian constitution had good confidence in the citizens who were expected to be patriots. Probably they least expected that the very representatives of people would stoop to the level of ' horse trading'.

Once again we see it in Karnataka, a hung Assembly after the recent elections. The Party with highest elected members is unable to form a government because it falls short of absolute majority.

The opposition is bent upon preventing it to form the government. They are ready to form 'unholy' alliances. Politicians who were slinging mud on each other a few days before the election are ready to become 'friends' after the results came.

Everyone knows that this kind of opportunistic friendship won't last. Soon 'President's Rule' will come in effect, a question of few month's time. This means bureaucrats will run the administration.

Attitude of these politicians reflect least respect for people's mandate. The president of a party -which lost deposit in nearly 140 constituents- aspires and manipulates the system to become the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Satish Acharya's todays cartoon in Star of Mysore aptly reflects the ground reality.

This is not the first time nor going to be the end of this problem. Public money is squandered in conducting elections because of absence of commitment by the representatives.

It is going to recur again again at both state level and National level. The logical remedy for this is, all elected members accept the People's mandate and allow a minority government to run its course while the opposition gives issue based support.

That is not going to happen, for seat of Power is for tapping the source of money, NOT working for Public Welfare

In that case a remedy has to be worked out through constitutional amendment which strikes off this 'number game' but reflects the spirit of people mandate.

What kind of amendment is required ?

1) Always the political party with highest representatives will form the government.

2) If they do not enjoy absolute majority they have to seek referendum To continue or Not to continue at the end of half term.

3) All public servants like IAS, IPS IFS Senior officers and Heads of Departments of different government departments ( in short all gazetted officials) will participate in an online electronic voting to decide the fate of the minority government. It is an inexpensive way of seeking opinion from citizens in responsible positions without any election expenses. Similar to Corporates seeking online-consent from share holders for Board Resolutions during AGM

4) The minority government will be able to implement all programs subject to certain restrictions with regard to launching mega projects ( like bullet train ).

At national level, the elected members of all state assembly will give their choice (continue or not to continue) for the Central Government to function in addition to public servants.

In other words, the first two and half years no party can move a 'no confidence motion' against the ruling party.

If the mandate of referendum is in favour of the government then for one more year no party can move a ' No Confidence Motion'. That means a fair opportunity is given to the largest party for a period of two and half to three and half years to demonstrate their efficacy of governance

If the referendum goes against the ruling party, then the Governor will request the ruling party to demonstrate the confidence of the Assembly for continuation of their governance.

This will reduce the election expenses on the exchequer and unruly behavior of vested groups of different political wings.

But, who is to bell the cat, I mean the politicians ?

What about GST ?

Two years back I wrote in this blog regarding technical as well commercial feasibility of Solar Charging Stations.

Good news is that now the government has come out with clarification that such Charging Stations do not require any licence.

Ordering 10000 EV cars do not promote usage of electric vehicles.

As pointed out in the presentation, the government should concentrate on promoting EV two wheelers with easy charging facility. It is the two wheeler population causing maximum drain on the petroleum exchequer.

It is not going to be easy to surmount the lobby of present two wheeler manufacturers as well as Oil companies who stand to lose their business.

How long will it take ? Do not know; we can go on creating confusion statutory requirements like

safety of installation, GST for selling electricity etc giving a long rope for the lobbying segments to give excuses for delaying the implementation.

Do not be surprised if it takes another five years with the speed with which Govt works :))

The sad part is our industrialists are not adapting to technological changes owing to the fear of unfavourable ROI ( return on investment).

Hence a plan for smooth transition should be worked out. Otherwise, one day a disruptive strategy will be put forth by somebody -like Jio 4G- others would fall in line.

A solution is outlined in this post for the Hoysala Temple Pillar mystery.

The mystery is, how 900 years back, the builders could employ machining technology to carve out stone pillars having more than 10 to 12 feet high, weighing several tonnes.

For more details watch this video.

The solution is not that difficult to figure out once we realize that our ancestors were very resourceful in using animal power like oxen, horses and not to forget elephants for various purposes. Traditionally oxen and horses were used in agriculture and drawing carts while elephants were used to shift heavy logs and boulders in various construction activities undertaken by the kings or temples.

The kind of stones in Hoysala Culture belt is known as soft stones or soap stone. It is easy to work with chisel and hammer and not as hard as granite rocks.
If you are familiar with village ghani -used for oil extraction -you will understand that what I have figured out is nothing but an extension of that. In the oil extractor the animal tied to the grinding -wooden-mortar goes around the expeller unit squeezing the oil seed between bowl and mortar.

What the engineers of ancient times have done is to attach solid chisels to a frame that rotates around the stone pillar. The frame is rotated using animal power like elephants because to cut a stone needs lot of power. As already elephants should have been there to move around the pillars or rocks during temple construction, it is logical to think that most probably they must of utilized elephants as source of power in carving out the delicate machining of the pillars.

Imagine what a grand sight it would have been, tens or hundreds of elephants simultaneously working in the complex and the amount of food for them being arranged !!

What a magnificent scale the operations should have been ! This kind of creativity could not have been possible but for peace prevailing in the kingdom. Essentially the civilization was at its peak in every respect, be it arts, literature or engineering.

In my last Post I had expressed severe reservation of failure of biometric recognition in Aadhar. Now it is well confirmed that UIDAI has come down to relax the requirement to OTP confirmation for linking the cell phone. No need to visit the store or biometry as per the latest notification. It is messaged through their twitter handle

Why Decemebr 1st ? Why not with immediate effect ? May be some technical glitch to set right!

How many SIM cards can be linked with one Aadhar card?

However the basic question which I raised remains " what is the purpose of biometry if it is going to fail in important identifications or implementation? How to make it more reliable and fail-safe ? These are the questions UIDAI ask themselves to offer better service to the nation.

One of the major claims of achievements of both governments (NaMo and Manmohan ) is the successful implementation of Aadhar card with its unique biometric tracking.

This is considered fool-proof unlike Election ID cards where manipulation was rampant.

Anything has to stand the test of time before big claims are made. In case of Aadhar card it seems to be premature.

I can share my experience (five case studies) with regard to biometric verification.

Case 1. Self - BSNL -Bangalore - After the failure to get verification from any of the right hand fingers, the left thumb matched. My Aadhar got linked with my mobile -success

Case 2. A friend 65 years old. Same BSNL office- None of the fingers in both hands could tally with Aadhar data base

Case 3. His wife 58 years - Same as her husband , none of the finger prints could be tallied.

They were sent back with an advice to visit Aadhar Kendra to update their biometric profile and they have time till end of December 2017

Case 4. Airtel , Bangalore. My father, age 85. Struggled for fifteen minutes. The staff taking pity at the super senior citizen did not give their trials by repeatedly requesting him to place his finger in different orientations and finally managed to get one finger authenticated. Success due to the patience of the staff.

Case 5. Vodafone , Mysore, wife's mother age 80. Spent nearly half an hour each at two different centres but could not get verified. She too was advised to visit Mysore-One Service Centre of Govt of Karnataka and update the biometric profile. Subsequently when visited the Mysore-One Kendra they informed that it is of no use and refused to carry out the update.

They advised that retina (or iris) verification is dependable as the finger prints are bound to differ due to skin wear and tear over a period of time. The question is who is to tell the government. Meanwhile SMS keeps pouring in for linking the cell phone with Aadhar otherwise face disconnection.

It is only the tip of iceberg. Imagine the wastage of man hours involved in various mobile centres and millions struggling to get their mobiles linked to Aadhar.

The service person at Vodafone said there is time till February. Good, the deadline has been moved from Decemeber to February 2018.

I understand that they are making Aadhar Card mandatory for school children also. If adults themselves find it difficult how do one expect growing children to have matching biometrics in the years to come?

Where is it going wrong? Is it in the sensitivity of sensors used or the training of staff and how quickly it can be resolved ?

If efficient governance is desired these are the questions to be urgently addressed. Otherwise Aadhar cards also will face natural death like Election ID cards.

This Post is somewhat a sequel to my earlier one in Novemeber 2016.

I made certain improvements for better data collection and utilization of electricity generated from my 2 KW roof top PV panels.

1) Extended the connection to Ground Floor with a change over switch and requested the tenents to use solar energy from morning 8 am to 5 pm everyday. This had improved the average generation from 6.5 kwh per day 8.5 kwh due to live consumption.

2) I attached a separate energy meter and measured the actual consumption. I wanted to know whether what is being generated is fully utilized or lost something due to inefficiency.

This is where I had a shock to find that only just about 55 %-60% of the generation is accounted in useful work. A closer watch helped me to understand that 25 to 30 % is lost in the MPPT inverter which goes on converting DC to AC or AC to DC back and forth.

My search through internet revealed that each time when this conversion takes place, there is a loss of 12 %. To put it simply 1) Solar to Inverter ( DC to AC)- 12% 2) Inverter to Battery ( AC to DC) -12% and again Battery to Inverter ( DC to AC) another 12% ie about 36% . This may vary with type of electical load, time of utilization, temperature etc.

Just see the values I recorded recently below :

What is shown in the red color is the consumption by the inverter for every kwh (or units) it deliverd. This is pretty constant showing that we are losing 0.41 kwh for every kwh used. That is HUGE !!

What I understand is that, it is inevitable if we continue to use 230V AC home appliances. Best way to reduce this loss is, to use appliances that run on Direct Current (DC).

Incidentally the DC appliance needs lesser energy compared to AC appliance to do the same job. For example a 60 watt, AC ceiling fan can be replaced by 27 watts DC ceiling fan. This is attributed to better torque delivery by DC machines.

An interesting study at NIIT Trichy, published in Dec 2016, showed that to operate a home wet grinder of same capacity, the DC motor needed lesser energy as compared to conventional AC motor. This in turn reduced the number of Solar panels from 12 to 6 !! They found similar trend with a dough making machine also. IIT ( Madras) too taking efforts to promote the concept of Direct Current utiliztion in micro grids to reduce the conversion losses.

For a wider acceptance of solar roof top electricity generation, thus, the home appliances need to be made available by the OEMs ( Original Equipment Manufacturers). This also reduces the size of solar panels and overall investment to a great extent. This should dawn on the Policy Makers.

Now, Government should step in - like they did to promote LED bulbs- through some subsidies or tax incentives to develop and promote DC appliances including refrigerators and air conditioners. This will pave way to decentralize energy generation towards self sustaining economic model.

I am sure in a few years this will become a reality and hence I can do More with my investment than what I originally thought !!

So much of confusion is created in the consumers' mind with the modern technological tools and many make believe stories are created everyday.

I came across this comparative photos 'Before & After' as part of anecdotal claim to make your teeth white and prevention of yellowing.

While I have no opinion about the product per se, what prompted me to write this post was they are trying to convince the reader using a digital manipulation technique.

It is very easy to see both the pictures are identical except for the color of the teeth. Compare the areas of red line on the left with that of right.

If the product has taken some time to work ( ~ one month, if I recollect correctly) they cannot be identical with respect to light, angle of picture shot etc.

Those who practice digital art know that it is very easy to change colors with a click of your mouse. It is no magic that the yellow becomes white or even any other color you wish.

Many whatsapp photos are also sent viral by this digital image manipulation. You can see a five headed cobra or a big temple on a high rise boulder sitting in the lake etc. Whenever you see some unbelievable picture, look for smudge marks around the areas or color patch-up. These may not be visible in a smaller resolution pictures. If we magnify the same in picture editor it will show up.

I only hope this manipulators don't have time to read this kind of posts. Otherwise in future they become smarter even to get trapped like this :))

Since yesterday I have been trying to configure my BHIM app in my Calling Lenovo tablet but all in vain.

Though claimed to be simple in operation with simple one line UPI address for cashless transaction my experience has not been satisfactory. I am suppose to receive an OTP which will enable to generate 6 digit UPI PIN. However I was repeatedly getting Error after following the procedure of enetering last six digits of my DEBIT/ATM card and its expiry date.

It was falling in to a loop of asking for Debit card digits and showing error in OTP generation. suddenly I received 3 OTPs all having 10 minutes validity. I entered the latest one and when it came to UPI-PIN confirmation it once again said 'error ' in accessing bank.

I went to user's review in Google play and was pleased to know that I was not alone and many others have had various other problems. I am sure it is because of the different models and hardware compatibility things are not that easy and it will take time remove the bugs or it will have natural disinclination from both user and vendor point of view with very limited usage.

Compare this complex process with simple Prepaid Swipe Cards where there is no need for mobile phone ( and hence no model dependent technology upgradation). It is far more easier to configure at the Banks or Post offices with equipments of standard features and network. Only GPRS based POS machines with the vendor enables completes cashless transaction.

Moreover suppose one wants to give children in college or school hostels ( where cell phones are not allowed) some pocket money the prepaid cards are safe. Aged persons or ladies travelling alone carrying substantial cash in the form of Prepaid Card are more secure against fear of theft or loss by absent mindedness.

Any technology can become successful only when it is user-friendly. By eliminating the bank-account linking of customer for every transaction (by not employing a phone) the need for data transfer comes down in the internet highway. This alone may save substantial cost for the banks in making the process feasible for Prepaid Cards.
Government of India is announcing many incentives to encourage cashless transactions.

What surprises me is that I could not find a prepaid card procurement and transacting it through point of sales outlets. It looks simple to implement.

In the present card transactions the main deterent seem to be the 2% transaction fee which VISA or MASTERCARD or PAYTM charges from the vendor.

Government of India can step in here and make it less than 0.5% as the volume is high. This can be collected even when the card is purchased so that the the vendor is not charged anything at the time of payment.

This arrangement should be gladly acceptable to every one.

Now POS machines have become very affordable -less than Rs.5000 - by any shop owner.
The whole scheme will work as shown below:

Have you installed your roof top electric generation ?

I could have afforded a luxury car. I never plan a second car as I consider it is improper ISR ( Individual's Social Responsibility) particularly under city's choked roads and pollution. Now a days there is so much talk on CSR -Corporate Social Responsibility. In my opinion there is equally an ISR where every citizen demonstrates that he (or she) does contribute by adding value to the way of life.

Coming back to the decision of car purchase, I decided to
settle down for a more fuel efficient car partly and invest in a roof top 2 KW solar power generation
unit. I did not go for net metering to
export power to grid due to reports of
long queue of applications and ‘unofficial extras’ for approval.

After installation it is generating 6.5 Kwh
to 7.2 kwh per day and totally independent of grid supply.

Our electricity bill has come down by Rs 900 per
month since july 2016. We are paying grid the minimum of Rs 120 to 140 to keep a standby
system. We retain this for heavy duty appliances like air conditioner,
microwave oven etc

A few well wishers and neighbors wanted to question the wisdom by way of ROR
–rate of return. In their point of view annual saving of Rs 10800 for an
investment of Rs 2.7 lakhs is just about 4% simple interest. An investment in
FD or NCD or Gold ( if not Equity) would be more than double !!

My counter question to them is, does it make them
independent of grid for electricity ?

Look it this way. A solar installation has more than 20
years of life with positive contribution of energy and saving GHG ( green house
gases). A luxury car only depreciates with contribution to GHG over the same
number of years. The former makes you
self reliant but the latter is subjected to market vagaries like international
crude prices and in turn rise in running cost.

Another fundamental question rises when we think
of real estate and housing sector. People are willing to invest anywhere
between 60 lakhs to several crores for a residential villa or apartment particularly in metros. Is it too much to expect them to
invest in Rs. 3 or 4 lakhs in solar
electricity so that they do not become a burden to the power grid ?

The public wealth (or savings) is grossly stored in
unproductive ways. What is meant by ‘unproductive’ is that wealth not being utilized
for generating more food or water or energy. It is lying in equity share
markets, Fixed Deposits and Gold. To
make it productive some government legislation or incentives may be necessary. Now
in Karnataka every newly built house should mandatorily install a solar water
heater.
It is quite sometime I wrote in this blog. The main reason is, now a days for some reason, I am reluctant to make critical comments about other's creativity. Creativity is a thing of evolution.

For every original creation there may be ten pseudo creations, akin to trend in movies or music. The originals survive the test of time. Some creations are ahead of time only to be recognized several years later like 'barcode' inventions

However sharing our views and concern regarding what is happening around us need not stop. Hence I decided to share things -though they are not blog specific - with one and all.

In this issue I wish to share the power point presentation I made regarding electric vehicles which are environmental friendly. The summer temperatures of Bangalore touching 39 degree Celsius is hitherto unheard of.

The obvious reason is increase in traffic on roads emitting smoke and heat. Not only Bangalore all towns and cities face a similar situation. The picture shows the news item how two wheelers dominate the Indian roads.

Any true solution can emerge only if we understand the root cause of the problem. The pollution caused by vehicles on Indian roads is mainly from scooters and motor cycles,

Please go through the following presentation and inform what comes to your mind. Your feedback will be valuable for other readers also.

For quite some time I wanted to write on this subject of Natural remedies.

The recent mail from Indiblogger triggered
that interest in me to open the web link
of Dabur’s Laltail and two things caught my attention. One was the hindi word for 'oil' ( sanskrit thailam). It could have been spelt 'thel' or 'thail' which are definitely different from 'Tail'. Some one should not make fun that the child would end up with a 'red tail' - ha ha just in lighter vein :)

The other one is the statement “ Ayurvedic Medicine”. Is it medicine or adjuvant?

We
will come back to this later, as I like to touch upon why I wanted to write on natural remedies.

Ever since my father, in his 80+, was successfully cured of his nervous
disorder through an ayurvedic doctor in Kerala I wanted to write on this
subject viz Chemical based Allopathy vis a vis Nature based Remedies.

In 2010,
suddenly his speech started to slur and developed difficulty in eating.
We thought it was facial palsy which could be temporary and with some
physiotherapy he would recover. It was not to be.

After treating for more than four months under
special supervision at NIMHANS Bangalore and other specialists in the field, we were losing hopes of his recovery. He could
not swallow even normal liquid food and had gone in to deep depression
resulting in loss of weight. All that the specialists could do was prescribe a
tablet –costing nearly Rs 57 per day- that temporarily strengthened his
nerves in throat and mouth so that he could eat some food. After an hour the
problem would be back with a bang. Slurred speech and uncontrollable saliva
secretion made his days quite miserable.
The name of the disorder was myasthenia
gravis.

A sinking person would cling to anything
that offers hope. Our attention turned towards ayurvedic remedy. Through
fortunate circumstances he was led to an Ayurvedic specialist near Palakkad and
better days began. He did not mind the extreme bitterness of couple of decoctions
nor the trouble of preparing them fresh everyday. Supported with few ayurvedic tablets his condition gradually
improved. Within next six months his speech returned to near normal he could eat
food without any difficulty and started
gaining the body weight!!

One of my uncles who visited him later
considered it as a “miracle” recovery. I responded saying 'our body itself is a
miracle'. Nature has gifted everyone with
a programmed mechanism to recover from injuries and ailments and diseases
provided we know how to recognise it. We
needlessly intervene in its mechanism with our own chemical based correction
which not only supresses the symptoms of one disease but also creates many undesirable
side effects !!

Today most natural therapists recommend
fasting and resting as the pre-requisite to help the body to work on its damage
control. Ayurvedic herbs mostly help as
very good adjuvants in strengthening the mechanism of repair rather than
directly dealing with the disease. They
provide the necessary tools to the system to
correct and eliminate undesirable toxins which are responsible for the
disease unlike the allopathy that
suppress and accumulate undesirable chemicals inside the body. Thus it
aggravates the problems further to complicate the life of the individual.

During the treatment period my father was
also prescribed medicated oil massage
which very religiously he used to
apply everyday. That reminded me of the frequent appeals of my mother for
weekly oil bath a typical south indian tradition in our younger days.

She is a staunch believer of regular oil
bath for cooling the body the way oil cools the auto engine. She never gave up
that comparison despite our protests that a steaming hot water bath after
oiling the body could never cool the body. Little we understood the connotation
of cooling in traditional system is
different from external bathing condition. However with passing years it dawned
on me that even the exposed skin is a living cell and can absorb and transfer
the molecules by osmotic diffusion that can help in absorption of useful
nutrients through blood

Coming back to Dabur’s Laltail, it is good
to see traditional knowledge is being experimented and getting validated through modern way of
scientific experimentation. This will go
a long way in reinforcing the new generation
that what is traditional does not mean outdated belief systems but very
much live and kicking to be noticed for the benefit of mankind.

Since the use of Laltail is being
recommended for all babies for a healthier growth, it is preferable to call it
as an Ayurvedic Adjuvant rather than Ayurvedic Medicine. In my humble
understanding of English language the word medicine connotes that which helps
"to cure a disease " whereas an adjuvant is
the one which supports and accelerates the benefits of a nutrient or medicine.

Today I am not discussing any advertisement.
I just want to point out the bug in AIR INDIA' 's online reservation system.

Look at the following two images which are screen shots I took when I wanted to book two tickets for senior citizens

Generally depending on dates I used to come across fare rates of Rs 9000-12000 on a Return booking. When I saw a fare Rs 35360 for one way - 2 senior citizens, I had a shock.
The copy "Listen to Nature" is also fine in that respect.

Take a look at the expression of the model.

He seem to be worried or at best lost in a world of his own, certainly not the one who seem to enjoy anything. There is no spark in his eyes.

May be a mobile company showing two of its cell-phone models or an audio equipment manufacturer with their speakers in a similar fashion- sticking to the ears- could have been more acceptable to me.

Is this the only way or best way to depict "Listen to Nature"?

I tried to figure out if I were to present the same concept what would have I done? In other words stepping in to the other man's shoes :)))

The result is what you see below (please bear with me for my lack of ability in graphics.)

The silhouette of a person amidst man-made concrete jungle yet constantly in touch with Nature, the comfort of the shoes radiating through upwards. The comfort of nature is heard in every step. The back drop visual can be a office complex or a busy mall in a slightly blurred but the shoes in good focus. The copy makes a prominent claim on natural fibre.

What is your take ?KABEER ANBANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00075275493860431935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5363503612938620265.post-43063844885725470942009-10-26T05:24:00.000-07:002010-01-09T02:55:13.290-08:00Cruze:is it running or stationary? It is always intriguing whether the creator of an Ad is able to successfully communicate what is desired.

There is a general belief that it is enough to influence the target audience, the decision makers. For example if I don't belong to the target audience it does not matter whether I understand the communication or not. To an extent it is acceptable.

A recent example of this I could see in the advertisement of Chevrolet's Cruze.

(If needed click on the image to see an enlarged picture)

What I could understand : RESPECT ! is what Cruze would 'command' Big and Bold.

1) It is the largest car with the most powerful engine in its class. No harm. I still perceive it as a new model, high end car.

However there are certain aspects, like visuals, which anyone can see and appreciate the way it compliments the theme of the advertisement.

In Chevy's case there seem to be some laxity in the post-shooting Art Work

The front tyre shown gives the impression that Cruze is coming to a halt after a cruise. 'Halt' because it is indoors. There is some motion still, felt by the viewer as the wheel-hub is quite shaky and no clear focus like a moving object. However the bumper betrays the fact that all along it was only a stationary car. Any one can see the reflection of the grill-work on it bar by bar under excellent focus !! The rear wheel too very clearly indicates the stationary status of the car. Where was the need to give a motion effect to the front wheel?

Such a great car is parked in an exhibition hall (that is my guess ) and photographed from an angle as if there was no room to stand and shoot ?

To me the visual does not adequately supplement the greatness of most powerful car 'Cruze'.KABEER ANBANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00075275493860431935noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5363503612938620265.post-55596461811893240652009-10-13T04:39:00.000-07:002009-10-25T18:23:45.838-07:00Indian Oil Corporation: xtrapremium at what cost ?We all know what Literacy is, but do you know what is Numeracy ?

Numeracy is the ability to understand the numbers (particularly with respect to Data or Statistics ) in correct perspective for a better understanding.

One can Make or Break any thing with the help of right (or wrong) use of numbers. All our politicians & economists know it :))

Generally I use xtrapremium petrol for my car as it results in lesser carbon deposit and higher mileage and overall smoother operation as claimed by Indian Oil Corporation. It is achieved by an additive and naturally there is a premium on it.

The cost difference is Rs 2.50 per litre of petrol in Bangalore. Normal Petrol is Rs 50.66 and Xtrapremium is 53.16 per litre.

Once while filling at the Petrol station a friend remarked "Oh that is 5 % more. Do you get 5% extra mileage ?"

Honestly I had no way of verifying this as city traffic conditions don't permit us a fair evaluation.

In a recent advertisement IOL claims 2.79 % improvement in fuel efficiency for their Xtrapremium. The first thought was "with drivers having diverse practices and idiosyncrasies this advantage is too thin and may not be realizable in most cases. Everyone knows that the results reported are under ideal test conditions and as such not effective in city driving.".

Then I recollected the reaction of my friend. Does it mean that I am getting only 2.79 % more mileage for using the premium petrol ? Am I paying 5 % more and get only 2.79 % advantage ? prima facie everyone seemed to agree.

My numeracy is under test ! Somehow I felt that our IOL energy experts cannot be that foolish to charge more for a lesser benefit. I decided to delve deep in to it. I did some quick calculations.

Say by filling 2 litre of normal petrol ( @Rs 101.32) I will be able to drive up to 32 Km whereas 2 litres of xtrapremium (@Rs 106.32) would take me additional 0.8928 Kms assuming 2.79% better mileage.

In terms of cost per Km of travel I incur Rs 3.166 with normal petrol and Rs 3.232 with xtrapremium. This is about 6.63 paise more per Km. If we interpret this data as % increase of cost (6.63/316) x 100 = 2.09 %

That's it. For a benefit of 2.79 % fuel efficiency the consumer is made to pay 2.09 % more. Nothing great but nothing much to complain also.

But what a way to realize this truth !! Does any average consumer have time to realize this fact through tortuous calculations? Most people would do what my friend did, jump to quick conclusion. Yes, most of us are still not numerate

To avoid such misgivings IOL's Advertisement needs to be more explicit in terms of cost economics -apart from making a simple statement of fuel efficiency.

It may be highlighted in terms of savings in billions of rupees to the National Exchequer or a qualified assessment of savings in maintenance cost of the vehicle (because of Friction Buster). These information must form as part of the body copy. Then there is a possibility of avoiding the misgivings that may arise in the common man's mind.

The success of communication lies in not giving room to further questions or doubts but proactively answer many that may arise while reading the message. From that point of view IOL's AD falls short of clarity though the fact has been furnished without exaggeration.

They may be congratulated for that as in World of Advertisement it is hard to find true reporting of facts.KABEER ANBANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00075275493860431935noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5363503612938620265.post-86366338685839132612009-09-08T05:55:00.000-07:002009-09-08T18:31:47.717-07:00I hate uglyBeauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Can we add a corollary " ............so do ugly "

I am a naivete vis a vis the fashion world. This is true for most of us irrespective of age or sex.

Thus the self assertion of the girl hardly matters to others. If she chooses to dress in a particular way it is her choice. It is for others to say whether it suits her or not. Here self assertion does not take her to any new heights.

A half page Ad in a Sunday Special edition, sans Allen Solly's Logo, seem to deliberately made out as an eye catcher.
